Tintín viaja a América del Norte, donde se enfrenta al temible sindicato de gángsteres de Chicago, entre ellos el famosísimo Al Capone. La idea inicial de Hergé era construir su relato alrededor del pueblo indio Piel Roja que siempre le había fascinado, pero luego quiso también mostrar lo máximo posible de América: los desiertos y las praderas, las industrias modernas y las grandes ciudades, la prohibición del alcohol, los gángsteres, los cow-boys y la expoliación de los indios pieles rojas, denunciando cómo fueron expulsados de sus tierras al encontrarse allí petróleo.
