Fue el catalán Pompeyo Gener (1848-1920) el primero en practicar una crítica de arte positivista en España. Su vinculación con las ciencias parece evidente ya que estudió Farmacia y Ciencias Naturales y obtuvo el título de doctor en la Universidad de Madrid. También asistió a cursos en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona y se hizo célebre por un libro que escandalizó a muchos de sus contemporáneos.

La muerte y el diablo (1880), publicado en francés. Inspirado en los principios liberales de la Revolución de Septiembre, arremetía en sus artículos contra la monarquía absoluta, la escolástica y el neoclasicismo, oficialistas y académicos.
