Escultura Talla “San Juan Evangelista” hacia 1580, taller Juan de Anchieta – Escuela Castellana

Exquisita talla de San Juan Evangelista realizada hacia el último cuarto del siglo XVI. De extraordinaria factura, la iconografía corresponde a la actitud de San Juan Evangelista en el Calvario, situado a la izquierda de Cristo. Clamando al cielo, sus ojos se presentan torneados sin embargo su rostro es sereno. Destreza y habilidad por parte del autor al desarrollar esta pieza, pensada para tener un único punto de vista, talla de bulto redondo pero supeditada a un retablo. La parte posterior no ha sido tallada, se encuentra desbastada para minimizar peso.

San Juan presenta una anatomía completa y exquisita, tanto en el rostro como en pies y manos. Su rostro sereno presenta un perfil griego gracias a su nariz recta. Así mismo, su pelo se configura con sendas ondulaciones de notable claroscuro. Sus manos en posición de rezo tienden a un realismo contenido y sus pies, con uno más adelantado que otro, siguen el contrapposto griego. Todas estas son característica clasicistas, presentes en las esculturas que beben del romanismo de Juan de Anchieta (1533-1588).

El manto terciado, le deja el hombro derecho al descubierto dejando ver la túnica, y se recoge en el brazo opuesto, cayendo en amplios pliegues ondulados que se abren para mostrar de nuevo la túnica de color verde con ricos brocados. Complemento ideal es su policromía. Al exterior, manto dorado con extraordinaria cenefa de ricas estofas de tono azulado; en el interior, el manto es de color rojizo. También cabe destacar el trabajo de policromía del rostro, realizado a pincel, como sus finas cejas o las dolorosas lágrimas.

Estado de conservación: Se trata de una escultura del siglo XVI, se conserva en buenas condiciones con respecto a su antigüedad y uso. Se aprecian evidentes signos de haber sido intervenida en el siglo XIX, redorándola y devolviéndola este brillo especial. Así mismo, se aprecian desgastes en las zonas de encarnación, nada molesto para la visión global del conjunto. Una pieza de magnifica factura para coleccionistas exigentes.

Exquisite carving of Saint John the Evangelist made towards the last quarter of the 16th century. Of extraordinary workmanship, the iconography corresponds to the attitude of Saint John the Evangelist on Calvary, located to the left of Christ. Crying out to the sky, his eyes are twisted, yet his face is serene. Skill and ability on the part of the author in developing this piece, designed to have a single point of view, a round carving but subordinated to an altarpiece. The back has not been carved, it is roughed to minimize weight.

Saint John presents a complete and exquisite anatomy, both in the face and in the feet and hands. His serene face presents a Greek profile thanks to his straight nose. Likewise, her hair is configured with notable chiaroscuro waves. His hands in a prayer position tend towards a contained realism and his feet, with one more forward than the other, follow the Greek contrapposto. All of these are classicist characteristics, present in the sculptures that draw on the Romanism of Juan de Anchieta (1533-1588).

The padded cloak leaves the right shoulder exposed, revealing the tunic, and is gathered on the opposite arm, falling in wide wavy folds that open to once again show the green tunic with rich brocades. The ideal complement is its polychrome. On the outside, a golden mantle with an extraordinary border of rich bluish tones; Inside, the mantle is reddish. Also worth highlighting is the polychrome work on the face, done with a brush, such as his thin eyebrows or painful tears.

State of conservation: This is a sculpture from the 16th century, it is preserved in good condition with respect to its age and use. There are obvious signs of having been intervened in the 19th century, renovating it and giving it back this special shine. Likewise, wear can be seen in the areas of incarnation, which is nothing disturbing for the overall vision of the whole. A magnificently crafted piece for demanding collectors.
