Así como la serie 2000T tuvo como objetivo la extensión de los servicios talgo por gran parte de la geografía española, el de las 3000T era llevar a Talgo y a RENFE hacia Europa a través de la creación de algún servicio Trans Europ Express (TEE). El objetivo se cumplió en cierta medida pero, como veremos, estas locomotoras sólo participaron en una primera época del mismo. Después, se integraron en el parque interior de "talgas" e hicieron casi un grupo único con las 2000T.
