Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells
- is the debut studio album by English musician Mike Oldfield, released on May 25, 1973 as a debut album on Virgin Records.
Oldfield, who was 19 when it was recorded, played almost all of the instruments on the predominantly instrumental album.
The album was slow to sell at first, but gained worldwide attention in December 1973 when its opening theme was used on the soundtrack to the horror film The Exorcist. This resulted in a jump in sales that raised Oldfield's profile and played a key role in the growth of the Virgin Group.
It stayed in the UK Albums Chart top ten for a year from March 1974, where it peaked at number one for a week.
It reached number three on the US Billboard 200 and reached the top position in Canada and Australia. The album has sold over 2.7 million copies in the UK and an estimated 15 million copies worldwide.
His contribution to British music was recognized when Oldfield played excerpts during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
In 2010, Tubular Bells was one of ten classic album covers by British artists to be commemorated on a series of UK postage stamps issued by the Royal Mail.
