Intestinal parasitic infections affect all segments of the population. They are much more common in rural areas and slums where hygiene is poor. Several techniques can be used to definitively diagnose these intestinal parasitic infections. Among these are direct examination, the Willis concentration method, and the formalin-ether concentration method. During our study conducted at the laboratory of the Abomey-Calavi/Sô-Ava regional hospital from April 2 to July 2, 2012, 110 stool samples were collected. For each stool sample, we performed direct examination, the Willis concentration method, and the formalin-ether concentration method. The study revealed that the results obtained depend on the specific technique used. Following the examinations, 23.64% of the stool samples tested positive using the FORMOL-ETHER method for the detection of protozoan cysts, and 18.18% tested positive via direct examination for the detection of cysts and vegetative forms of digestive protozoa; whereas the WILLIS method did not reveal any parasites. Thus, the FORMOL-ETHER method proves to be highly effective in detecting digestive protozoan cysts and therefore significantly complements direct examination.
