A savage new tragedy inspired by Euripides? The Bacchae.
The women of Thebes are leaving. They abandon looms, husbands, children, and the ordered life of the city for the slopes of Cithaeron, where drums sound, wine flows, and the name of a strange god is beginning to spread.
Pentheus, young heir to the throne of Thebes, intends to stop them. He believes a city can be counted, governed, and controlled. Then four beautiful women from Mount Tmolus are brought into his grandfather?s household, among them the golden-haired Gynnis, whose presence seems to disturb everything Pentheus thinks he understands about women, power, desire, and the divine.
As Thebes gives way to ecstasy, Pentheus becomes increasingly obsessed with seeing what happens on the mountain for himself, never recognizing that Diónysos is already far closer than he imagines.
DIÓNYSOS is a contemporary full-length stage tragedy of individual freedom, political authority, voyeurism, faith, violence, and the terrifying human need to possess what refuses to be explained.
