Displaying his typically deft touch, writer extraordinaire Steve Gerson delivers his latest flurry of sculpted stories. Grim offers a stunning recasting of what can broadly be characterized as fairy tales. Imaginative, stunningly creative, continuously fascinating, Gerson?s renditions range from the deliciously, delightfully macabre to sly examinations of our contemporary age with a panoramic sweep through Covid, AI, ICE, Ukraine, and today?s politics.
-Dr. Robert C. Cottrell, author of The Heyday of Willie, Duke, and Mickey
Although I have previously commented on how Steve Gerson?s poetry provides an amazing depiction of the great plains, both in terms of imagery and also a clear ?mindfulness,? I am equally impressed with the satire and insight demonstrated throughout this new collection-Grim. With no doubt, this twist on an historical collection of children?s tales is both engaging and enlightening; however, his shift to poetic prose as a writer is even more amazing, and in the process, the reading becomes a sensitive connection to a time past, to words and relationships far removed from a child?s story experiences. ?Broken Crown? which reflects lines on ?Jack and Jill? is not only hilarious to read but the juxtaposition of character and relationship is engaging. From bloody worms crawling from apples on the teacher?s desk to a wife?s dislodged foot as her husband?s lunch, the imagery and imagination are paramount within this writing.
-Dr. Bill Lamb, English Professor
These modern interpretations of beloved fairytales are a dark and slightly whimsical collection of prose and poetry. They remind me of not only the famous Grimm brothers, but also the German stories of Shockheaded Peter, where the grotesque meets the playful. The reframing of the basic ideas into contemporary vernacular without the trite, literal paraphrasing that traps many a writer provides a mysterious ride through contemporary culture.
-Collin Thomas, Media and Marketing Manager
Fairy tales have always been darker than we remember. In Grim, Steve Gerson does what he does best: taking familiar stories, colliding them with contemporary anxieties, and finding the unsettling humanity underneath. Here, the fairy tales become a lens for loneliness, technology, and moral ambiguity rather than nostalgia. Steve wields lyrical prose, poetry, and flash fiction to transform ordinary myths into unsettling reflections on the world we inhabit today.
