From this country have come many of the choicest and bestknown shrubs and herbs which are hardy in our north temperate gardens. These were first introduced here in the nineteenth century by collectors for Sir William and Sir Joseph Hooker, Directors of Kew, or by men sent out by the firm of Veitch. The Kew collectors were often Scotsmen such as Alexander Caldcleugh, Alexander Cruckshanks, John Gillies and James Macrae; or Englishmen like Hugh Cuming and Thomas Bridges; while the most distinguished Veitch collectors were William Lobb and Richard Pearce. The successful introductions by these men included such attractive plants as LAPAGERIA, PHILESIA, EURCRYPHIA, DESFONTAINEA and EMBOTHRIUM, and, in our own day, Clarence Elliott and Harold Comber have added others, for instance, ALSTROEMERIA LIGTU and LEUCOCORYNE. Some Chilean plants, in some form or other, have reached the humblest cottages. All these and very many equally famous shrubs and herbs which are always in request by gardeners in temperate climates have been illustrated in this book by the exceedingly beautiful paintings of señor Eugenio Sierra Ráfols, Assistant of Botany at the University of Chile, while the admirable accompanying text, giving a brief history of each plant and details of its biology and uses, has been written by Professor Carlos Muñoz Pizarro, who is Professor of Economic Botany at the University, and also a staff member of the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural at Santiago." - Prologue by Sir George Taylor, director of the Royal Botanical Gardens.
