In the great canon, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the first week of Great Lent is sung and read piecemeal, and on Thursday morning, the fifth week of the same Lent is read in full, the Great Canon of St. Andrew, Archbishop of Crete, who died in 712. The Great Canon is called mainly for its breadth, because it contains 210 tropes, not counting the tropes subsequently added to its composition in honor of St. Mary of Egypt and the creator of the canons, Andrew of Crete (all tropes 250).
