No one familiar with the film based on this novel could forget the voiceover reciting the opening line of Daphne du Maurier’s greatest work: *Rebecca*. Thus begin the memories of the second Mrs. de Winter, transporting her back to the isolated, grey mansion on the damp, windswept coast of Cornwall. Accompanied by a husband she barely knows, the young wife arrives at this vast estate, only to be inexorably stifled by the ghostly presence of the first Mrs. de Winter—the beautiful Rebecca, dead yet never forgotten. Her room remains untouched, her dresses ready to be worn, and her housekeeper—the sinister Mrs. Danvers—still harbors an unhealthy devotion to her. Gripped by a chilling premonition that something evil is tightening its hold on her heart, the young woman begins to investigate Rebecca’s true fate: the dark secret of Manderley.
