La idea original de Joe Cassey era desarrollar una serie limitada donde se explicase el origen de la Patrulla-X mostrando los momentos anteriores al número 1 USA (de 1963). Una nueva versión de los orígenes de la Patrulla-X, que aparecieron por primera vez entre 1967 y 1968. Desde esta perspectiva «Hijos del átomo» sería una historia imaginaria que no tendría proyección en el presente de la Patrulla-X.
Hoy, con Joe Cassey como nuevo guionista de «Uncanny X-Men», el origen de la Patrulla-X presentado en este volumen puede llegar a tener cierta proyección en el futuro de la colección mutante. Estamos, pues, ante una historia compacta y bien escrita, con un tratamiento gráfico que encaja a la perfección con el estilo del argumento que puede llegar a ser trascendental.
