A principios de la década de 2010, el Gobierno Federal de Transición de Somalia ordenó que se imprimiera una nueva familia de billetes en Sudán.

En 2013, el nuevo gobierno federal de Somalia declaró que la introducción de los billetes se posponía hasta una fecha posterior no especificada, en espera del fortalecimiento de las instituciones financieras en Somalia.

En 2018, el Banco Central de Somalia indicó que el gobierno y el Fondo Monetario Internacional se estaban preparando para imprimir nuevos billetes de 1.000, 2.000, 5.000*, 10.000, 20.000 y 50.000 Shilin.

En 2021, el Banco Central de Somalia dijo que permanecían enormes cantidades de billetes somalíes Shilin en un almacén sudanés.

En 2023, estalló una guerra civil en Sudán entre las Fuerzas Armadas Sudanesas y las Fuerzas paramilitares de Apoyo Rápido. Posteriormente, estos billetes somalíes no emitidos comenzaron a aparecer esparcidos por las calles de Jartum.
