Contra CLAUDII ANONYMI, aliàs SALMASII, DEFENSIONEM REGIAM. Cum indice. LONDINI, Typis Dv Gvardianis, Anno Domini 1651. In 12º (13x7,5 cm) com 260, [xii] págs. Encadernação da época em pergaminho rígido. Obra em resposta a Slamatius com a refutação do direito divino e absoluto dos reis. Milton questiona como é que um grande académico pode defender tal principio e defende a abolição da monarquia pelo poder do povo. Milton's response was celebrated as a victory over the defence of Salmasius of absolute monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings. Milton questions how the great European scholar could defend the principle of divine right and he defends the overthrow of the monarchy by the people. Milton was proud of this work on the defense of Cromwell's protectorate, which brought him European fame. It was an officially defense of the English people commissioned by Parliament against an attack on the new Republic by one of Europe's greatest scholars, the learned Claudius Salmasius. Milton believed it to be a reasoned defense of regicide (the execution of Charles I in 1649) an eloquent defense of liberty. Ref.: ESTC R40028.
