A Spanish official and courtier, Oviedo spent almost 20 years in Panama, Colombia and Hispaniola, and took a great interest in the native peoples and the animal and plant life of the New World. To him we owe the first extant descriptions of many New World species, as well as the best picture of what the New World was like in the early 16th century. Edited by José Amador de los Rios, this constitutes the first full-length printing of the sections originally published in Spain in 1526, 1535 and 1547, adding maps, a bibliography and an excellent biography of Oviedo.
