ARCHITECTURE IN PAKISTAN - KAMIL KHAN MUMTAZ - 1985 FIRST EDITION - ENGLISH - ARQUITECTURA

This book presents the first comprehensive history of architecture in Pakistan from pre-historic to contemporary times. Although many of the historic buildings have been catalogued and published as articles, this work fills a significant gap in understanding Pakistan's architecture by encompassing not only the old but the new in one volume. Starting with the earliest archaeological settlements and the Indus Valley civilisation of 2500 B.C.. the early chapters cover pre- Islamic architectures. The first point of contact with the Mughals in the 14th century came through Pakistan and created the distinctive Indo-Pakistani Islamic architecture. From then onwards the British colonization of the country in the 18th century brought with it an adapted colonial architecture and the emergence of the native builders and the arts and crafts schools. A chapter also examines both urban and rural vernacular (indigenous non-architect designed) building which forms a significant part of Pakistan's architectural heritage but one which is usually ignored. This book also covers architecture after independence in 1947 and brings the review up to the 1980's.
