The Palladians repreents a unique "double first" in architectural literature. Until now there has been no modern account of the group of English architects, including some of the greatest names of the age, who, as followers of Palladio, in turn helped to shape the course of English architecture during the early seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Never before has such an authoritative study been based on the original working drawings of the architects concerned.
John Harris is the Keeper of the Royal Institute of British Architects Drawings Collection and has therefore had access to the most complete storehouse of drawings in Britain. With these basic materials, he has himself brought the skill of a master builder to this archievement. After an introduction which provides a valuable background of the period, the main body of his tet serves as a complementary accompaniment to the drawings.
