Publisher's hard art cover (Halfboard), Reduced format 17 x 14 cm. The dog kingdom was first published in the children's collection Firebird in St. Petersburg: Rosehip publishing house, 1912. In 1946, a separate edition of the fairy tale appeared with drawings by S. Chekhonin. The work was not included in any of Chukovsky's collections and was reprinted only once in 1991 as a reproduction of the 1946 book. The story was republished in 1946, but the censors took the book as an allusion to the Soviet Union and there was a monstrous scandal. The book was confiscated and withdrawn from the sale and collections of public libraries and remained banned until perestroika.
