Lazarov discusses the birth of national icon painting, the technique and aesthetics of Russian icons, leading artistic schools, individual masters, and their best works. While maintaining a scholarly, even academic style, the book is written in a way that will be of interest to a wide range of readers. The first volume consists solely of the text of the monograph, while the other volumes serve as albums.
