In Russian. Short description: Russian Icon Painting from the Origins to the Beginning of the 16th Century. Moscow: Iskusstvo, 2000. © Iskusstvo 1983, 1994 Iskusstvo 2000. This is one of the finest publications on the history of Russian icons. It represents the last major work by the specialist in ancient Russian and Byzantine art, Victor Nikitich Lazarov (1897-1976). It was written between 1969 and 1971 and prepared by him for the English publisher Phaidon Press. The monograph was intended as a continuation of the previously published Old Russian Murals and Mosaic by the same publisher but was delayed indefinitely. In a clear and comprehensible manner, Victor N. Lazarov discusses the birth of national icon painting, the technique and aesthetics of Russian icons, leading artistic schools, individual masters, and their best works. While maintaining a scholarly, even academic style, the book is written in a way that will be of interest to a wide range of readers. The first volume consists solely of the text of the monograph, while the other volumes serve as albums. Each volume begins with explanations of the illustrations, including descriptions of icons, dating, origin, and brief descriptions of the subjects.
