El libro reúne cien ilustraciones que hizo este artista, ilustrador y grabador francés del siglo XIX (Paul Gustave Doré, Estrasburgo, Francia, 6 de enero de 1832 – París, Francia, 23 de enero de 1883) para una historia de las cruzadas. Los textos que acompañan las ilustraciones en este ejemplar, de Francisco Caudet Yarza y María José LLorens Camp (Edimat Libros, España) son algo confusos, aun cuando debemos reconocer que no resulta fácil resumir en pocas páginas una historia tan compleja como la de esta "guerra santa" adelantada por la recuperación de Jerusalem y del Santo Sepulcro de manos de los musulmanes, que se inició en el año 1095 y se dio por terminada en 1270.
