El 15 de junio de 1906, un barco naufragó durante una tormenta y los únicos supervivientes fueron los profesores Achilles Kunbertus y Stephen Lupus, zoólogos de la Universidad de Edimburgo, quienes, navegando sobre una mesa de nogal, bebiendo agua de lluvia, aterrizando en una isla desconocida para todos, poblada de extraños animales como Cockeruth, Pescemobile, Gorilla Vaichesei, Leometra y muchos otros. Esta isla, más tarde llamada Stranalandia, está habitada por un solo indígena, Osvaldo y casi todo toma su nombre de él; entonces hay tres sirenas: María Delfina, María Balena y Mariovalda, respectivamente la esposa, la suegra y la hija de Osvaldo.
