Original 1912 Oscar Wilde SALOME Aubrey Beardsley Drawings John Lane Gilt PoppyOriginal hardbound 1912 edition of Salome, translated from the French of Oscar Wilde, with 16 drawings by Aubrey Beardsley, published by John Lane more than one hundred years ago. This book measures 8¾" x 7¼" and has an olive green cloth cover with gilt embossed ornate poppy design. The spine is stamped in gilt: Salome by Oscar Wilde. There are 66 pages of text, plus the 16 plates by Beardsley and 18 pages of front matter, including a preface by Robert Ross, a cast list of the New Stage Club production, and a tipped-in facsimile of the 1905 operatic program.Salome was Oscar Wilde's one-act play retelling the biblical story of King Herod's stepdaughter Salome, who asked for the head of Herod's prisoner, John the Baptist, on a silver platter in exchange for performing an erotic dance for her step-father.Beardsley's illustrations, drawn in stark black and white, resonate with erotic power and embellish Wilde's text with provocative imagery. Note, for example, the horned hermaphroditic figure on the title page and the naked on-looker seated at lower left, hands placed suggestively between his/her legs, in the drawing of Salome's toilette. This edition was published by John Lane, London, and is dated 1912 (MCMXII) on the title page. It was printed by Willim Clowes & Sons, Ltd.Condition: It is in ine condition, tight and clean, with strong hinges; the volumen has a few drawings inside Beardley´s drawings, possibly made by a kid, but it is an absolutely readable condition.
