[…] The Exhibition “Questions on German History” opened in the Reichstag Building in Berlin in 1971 and was expanded a few years later. Its purpose was to afford the German public an opportunity to examine their past through a critical appraisal of the highs and lows of German history. The spirit of the Exhibition's very location drew visitors' attention to these central questions: the Reichstag Building stood next to the Berlin Wall, then the dividing line between freedom and dictator-ship, and offered a clear view of the inhuman “death strip” beyond. Only a minute's walk away stood the Brandenburg Gate, so often at the centre of significant events in the course of German history. Once the gateway into Berlin's historic city centre, its was now in no-man's land -unpassable, indeed inaccessible. The Reichstag Building itself also embodied the spirit, and the questions, of those times: a building with a chequered history, under the terms of the Four Power Agreement it could no longer be used for sittings of Parliament. But it nevertheless housed a fully equipped plenary chamber large enough to accommodate all the members of parliament in a reunified Germany at any time -the symbol of a hope which was finally to be fulfilled in October 1990.
