Jacinto, un torero retirado que vive miserablemente con su sobrinito Pepote, recibe una carta en la que se le comunica que, según lo acordado, debe participar en una charlotada que se celebrará ese mismo día en Las Ventas. A Jacinto la carta le parece una broma de mal gusto, puesto que no ha firmado ningún contrato pero, cuando está recogiendo colillas en los alrededores de la plaza, comprueba que su nombre figura en el cartel.
