Aunque perdió la visión en un ojo a los veinte años, continuó pintando con una tenacidad excepcional.

Munnings se formó en la Norwich School of Art y posteriormente se unió a la Escuela de Newlyn, una comunidad de artistas asentados en Cornualles, donde perfeccionó su estilo naturalista y su dominio del color y la luz. Under the title “The Huntsman. Ned on the Brown Mare”, the piece captures an autumnal hunting scene in the countryside.

The composition, with a single hunter in the foreground, reflects Munnings' already mature style, which tended to portray equine figures with particular attention. This approach appears in his work from 1907 and was consolidated during his stay in Cornwall, when he was nostalgic for the hunting scenes in his hometown.

More than a simple hunting scene, this image conveys the vital impulse of the rider, the drama of the jump and the technical prowess of the artist. Of particular note is the artist's excellent anatomical work in portraying the horse. Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878-1959) was a leading British painter, celebrated for his mastery in depicting horses and hunting scenes. Born in Mendham, Suffolk, he developed from a young age an intimate connection with the English countryside, animals and rural life, which would deeply mark his work. Although he lost the sight in one eye at the age of twenty, he continued to paint with exceptional tenacity.

Munnings trained at the Norwich School of Art and later joined the Newlyn School, a community of artists based in Cornwall, where he perfected his naturalistic style and his mastery of color and light. During World War I he was assigned as a war artist, an experience that further cemented his reputation.

His lively technique and deep anatomical knowledge of the horse made him one of the most sought-after equestrian portraitists of his time.
