A refined French painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, first canvas, artwork depicting a captivating biblical scene: Hagar with the young Ishmael in a desert landscape. An Egyptian slave and mother of Abraham's firstborn, Hagar was banished with her son Ishmael by order of Sarah, the Prophet's first wife. Wandering in the desert, mother and son suffer from thirst until God intervenes by sending an angel to save them.
The composition is balanced, the drawing accurate, while the arid landscape and earthy colors accentuate the drama of the narrative. The painting combines narrative sentiment with a sober stylistic language. The contemporary frame in wood and gilded gesso is particularly valuable, enhancing the beautifully decorated artwork, with some signs of aging and small missing decorations on the outer border. Perfect for classical or eclectic environments, this canvas is a significant example of the 19th-century French tradition.
Painting that has undergone conservative restoration with the application of small patches on the back (see photo) and repainting in some areas. Overall, the painting has a beautiful patina and is in good condition. Internal size: H 90.5 x W 71.5 cm.
