The English Satirical Print, 1600 - 1832. The Common People and Politics 1750 - 1790's - John Brewer.

Fine/Very good hardback with dj. Dustjacket slightly rubbed along top edge, with a very small tear. Dark green boards with gilt lettering on front and spine. 119 illustrated plates with their description on facing page. This book is hard to find.

A striking feature of the prints is the use of body language and physiognomy to depict different social types.  What emerges from them is the essential conservatism of the cartoonists towards popular politics: when the common people seemed more ridiculous than menacing, they used a combination of satire and witty disparagement against them: when posing a genuine threat, they were viciously attacked, execrated and jeered at.
