"Shigeo Toya (1947-) majored in sculpture at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, and began working as a sculptor in earnest in the 1970s. In the midst of the contemporary art trend in which the genre of sculpture was being criticized and dismantled, Toya has continued to question what sculpture is, exploring its origins and sculptural expressions from all over the world, past and present. After his first solo exhibition, "POMPEII..79" (1974), he began to present conceptual and compositional works that explored human actions, memories, and gazes. In the mid-1980s, he began producing the "Forest" series, in which he carved the surface of wood with a chainsaw, which received high praise. In 1988, he participated in the Venice Biennale, and continued to exhibit his work both at home and abroad, becoming known as one of Japan's leading contemporary sculptors. He has been actively working for half a century, starting with the "From the Border" and "Minimal Baroque" series in the 1990s, the "Cave Body" series in the 2000s, and the "Gaze Body" series in recent years. Furthermore, the words that Toya weaves in tandem with his productions convey his attitude of grasping the conflicts between different concepts such as self and other, inside and outside, Japan and the West, and continuing to seriously question these as his own problems. In addition to illustrations of Toya's major works, this book also includes comprehensive essays, including some reprints, making it a volume that allows readers to look at Toya's work from multiple angles."
