Most books about Greek metre do not distinguish clearly enough between certain facts, known from the evidence of the poetical texts themselves, and theories which are to some extent subjective or hypothetical. This book aims to set out in the most concise manner possible the basic facts about the subject. Since it first appeared in 1927, it has been recognized as the best statement of these facts, even by those who are repelled by its scepticism regarding theories.
